How did your creative journey start?

It feels like I simply fell into my craft. There was definitely no forward planning or particular vision at first, but I just took each step in a direction that felt right at the time. From playing around with scraps of wood and a rusty handsaw, I felt compelled to buy a scroll saw as soon as I heard of their existence, despite having no real idea what I was going to do with it. A year or so later, I began to develop my style and focus, and a passion was well and truly uncovered.

Can you explain your creative process? How has it changed over time?

I use my scroll saw almost like an accurate sketching tool, following the flow and form of my subject. I then use shaping and colouring techniques to help bring life and depth to my work.

Who influences you? Which other creatives’ work do you love?

Whilst I really enjoy seeing the work of other artists – particularly those who work with wood and the 3D form – my main influence is nature and my subjects, rather than any particular individual creative.

What advice would you give creatives who are just starting out?

Try and find your niche or individual style. Being able to offer something a little bit different will really help you to stand out.

What can visitors expect when visiting your space during Falkirk Open Studios?

I will have a selection of my original wildlife artwork and commissions on display, including a few pet portraits. I find my work is much easier to convey in real life, as it isn’t always possible to fully grasp its depth and structure online. I will also have a range of pieces available to purchase at a variety of price points.
