Name: Falkirk & District Art Club

How did your organisation start?

Falkirk & District Art Club’s (FDAC) roots stem from a group of enthusiastic former students of the Falkirk Art and Science School founded in 1863. The club has been through many incarnations over the years, with the modern FDAC being established on 15 January 1965. Today, the club offers a welcoming, supportive space where creatives and painters of all skill levels can meet, share techniques, and socialise with like-minded people.

What creative activities you offer as an organisation?

Club members meet on Monday evenings from September through till May at Larbert Cross Church Hall. We alternate between general art evenings, where members bring along artwork they are progressing, and workshops or art demonstrations, where we are guided by visiting artists or follow online tutorials and challenges. Firm favourites are our portrait and live model evenings. The club also organises outings to large exhibitions, art festivals and plein air sessions for those wishing to try their hand at outdoor painting. We host an annual art exhibition and several pop-up exhibitions. We have recently entered a community partnership with Falkirk Football Club, generating different opportunities for our club members.

Who does your organisation admire?

With a club of 50+ members, there are many artists that are admired by our members. The varied and eclectic tastes stimulate many conversations over a cup of tea – from the colourists and classic art right through to contemporary artwork, including pieces by Billy Connelly! The club also admires artists who can clearly display and articulate their approach and creative process, sharing their knowledge and helping club enthusiasts develop their own skills.

What advice would you give creatives who are just starting out?

FDAC is a great support mechanism for those starting out. Members share and learn from each other, as well as our invited artists and demonstrators. The club also gives new artists a taste of what it is like to be part of an exhibition. Aside from the club, the best advice is to practice, practice, practice. Look at artists you admire. What is it that you like that they do? Focus on observation and drawing skills. Be prepared to just give it a go and learn what you enjoy about colour, or mark-making, subject matter or medium. Be open to trying new approaches or something new – it could be just your thing!

What can visitors expect when visiting your space during Falkirk Open Studios?

We are holding a single-day pop-up exhibition on Saturday 12 September at Larbert Cross Church Hall. Members will be there to share more about the club over a cuppa, and we will have original member artwork and prints on display and available for sale. We hope visitors will also take time to observe and take part in some painting.
