How did your creative journey start?

My creative journey has always been part of who I am. I’ve loved making and creating for as long as I can remember. After school, I studied a two-year NC in Art and Design, then went on to complete a BA (Hons) in Printed Textiles. Since then, creativity has always threaded through my work — from interior design and photographic styling to running art workshops and working as an artist with Artlink Central. Looking back, every stage has shaped the way I work now as an artist.

Can you explain your creative process? How has it changed over time?

My creative process usually starts with photographs I’ve taken of places that catch my eye — streets, cottages, rooftops, harbours or little details in the landscape. Back in the studio, I build the scene up in layers using paint, inks and drawing materials, adding colour, texture and small details as the painting develops. Over time, I feel my work has become stronger and more confident. I’ve always loved a naive element in art, which you can still see in my earlier work, but my paintings have moved from a more design-led feel towards recognisable places full of character and atmosphere.

Who influences you? Which other creatives’ work do you love?

I’ve always loved the work of 20th-century British artists like Alfred Wallis and Joan Eardley. There’s something about their work that feels real. I also love contemporary artists like Annora Spence — her work has such lovely colour and character. Also, lately Grandma Moses…just found her recently! I’m also inspired by the women around me — my mum, grandmothers, sisters, friends and women running their own businesses. Love their just do it attitude.

What advice would you give creatives who are just starting out?

Paint, make, draw, sew, craft — whatever your thing is — just keep doing it. Even on the days when you don’t feel like it, just do a wee bit. The more you show up, the more your own style starts to appear.

What can visitors expect when visiting your space during Falkirk Open Studios?

Visitors can expect a warm welcome, lots of colour and probably a wee blether! My studio is where everything happens — painting, planning, making a mess, framing prints, packing orders and drinking plenty of tea. You’ll see my tools, materials, works in progress and lots of finished artwork too, including original paintings and prints. It’s a relaxed chance to have a nosey behind the scenes and see how I work.
